SKOPJE, 13 November 2007 - The Ombudsman from the Spanish autonomous community of Aragon, Fernando Garcia Vicente, shared best practices in handling cases of protecting the rights of women and persons deprived of liberty at a meeting in Skopje today.

The event was organized by the Macedonian Ombudsman Institution and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain, and supported by the OSCE Mission.

"Stronger links between the Spanish and local Ombudsmen institutions can help share best practices used for dealing with specific problems," said Ambassador Giorgio Radicati, the Head of the OSCE Mission.

Local Ombudsman Ixhet Memeti added: "Exchanging experience is one of the key principals in the Ombudsman's work. When you hear about someone's achievements you can acknowledge the faults in the work of your own institution."

The OSCE Mission, in co-operation with the Swedish International Development Agency, has been supporting the development of the Ombudsman Institution through a series of projects. Six regional offices were opened, the head office in Skopje received computers, public-awareness campaigns were organized, and Ombudsman staff received training on processing human rights cases.
