OSCE Mission to Skopje supports training of municipal officers on tax administration

SKOPJE, 11 May 2007 - Some 120 administration officers from 84 municipalities will take part in a series of workshops on tax collection regulations, with the first one held in Dojran today.
The training courses, initiated by the Association of Financial Officers and supported by the OSCE Mission to Skopje, come at a time when municipalities prepare for the second phase of the decentralization process under which more responsibilities will be transferred to the local government.
"Efficient and sustainable tax collection is a cornerstone for the proper functioning of municipalities. Without stable income, a viable tax collection system, municipalities will not able to provide essential services to their citizens," said Philipp Stiel, the Head of Public Administration Reform Unit within the OSCE Mission.
The workshops follow other capacity-building activities in the field of administration of local taxes and fees implemented in 2005 and 2006.
